Florida Man Brought Booby-Trapped Rifle on Amtrak Train, Prosecutors Say
So apparently — and I cannot stress this enough — you are not supposed to bring a booby-trapped rifle onto an Amtrak train. Even in New Jersey. Especially if you're a Florida man.
On April 17, 2025, prosecutors announced charges against 34-year-old Jeffrey Kennerck, accused of bringing guns and ammunition aboard an Amtrak train in New Jersey. According to prosecutors, the rifle was allegedly booby-trapped, which is a phrase that should never share a sentence with "passenger rail."
Look, I've made some questionable luggage choices in my day. I once flew with a suitcase that smelled like burnt crayons and regret. But even I know the rules: three ounces of shampoo, no. Booby-trapped rifle, absolutely not.
New Jersey prosecutors have not exactly rolled out the welcome mat here, and the charges are stacking up. The weapon was reportedly rigged, which upgrades the whole situation from "bad idea" to "why, sir. Why."
Florida man remains unavailable for comment, presumably somewhere with fewer trains and more consequences.
